Wenlock Barn

built by the hands of many the kitchen as the heart of the home and the heart of a community

The Growing Kitchen, Wenlock Orchard and the Back Garden are award winning public spaces that SASA Works and Fourthland have worked on in collaboration with Estate residents beginning in 2008 and developed over a 11 year period. The project transformed spaces on the Estate into public gardens increasing biodiversity and cultivating culture and kindness.

Each of the spaces were built following self build principles - guiding people with their own hands to lay bricks, carve and joint wood to build meeting spaces, clay ovens and learn to grow plants and vegetables. The spaces over the years have hosted numerous resident led, performances, feasts and seasonal celebrations imbuing wonderful stories into the memory of place.

“One of the few projects that have truly delivered cross generational, cross gender, cross ethnicity, cross ablebodied and not; it has enabled neighbours on one of the most troubled areas on a troubled estate to get to know each other and develop a sense of community, succeeding to become part of the fabric of the estate.”

– Anna Eagar, Director of Housing and Urban Regeneration Shoreditch Trust
