Care guide

The beauty of working with elemental materials such as solid wood and metal is that it they are materials that can gracefully patina with time. This means that with the right care our pieces will age beautifully with use and life. All of the pieces we make are for interior spaces, unless otherwise stated.

Wood furniture care All of our pieces are finished with a selection of natural oils made by Osmo and Woca. These oils allow the surface to keep its beauty and deeply enter the wood making the pieces hardwearing at the same time allowing the pieces to breathe. The oils provide a good protection against spillages and our recommended approach to cleaning is a natural damp cloth used immediately. If you would like to clean the piece more throughly warm soapy water with a natural cleaning product is what we would recommend such as Woca Natural Soap. Working with solid wood also means that more heavy damage to the surface can be sanded and then the surface refinished.

If anything more significant occurs to the piece whilst in your care we are happy to advise on the best way to treat or repair any damage so do be in touch. As the beauty of the piece through the years is important to us we do also offer a refinishing service.

As wood is a living material it is subject to movements in different climatic areas from the place that it was made. We advise that the pieces are not in direct sunlight or placed in front of a direct heat source as this may alter the surface and the dimensions of the works. Changing temperatures and humidity can also sometimes cause warpage and shrinkage and dimensions changes addressing issues of moisture or humidity in rooms will usually resolve the issue.

Metal care Our steel work is finished with a patina to darken the surface and then is waxed with Renaissance wax (as used in the British museum). More of this wax can be applied to the works at any time, especially if the work is subject to moisture. We would however advise that for the more sculptural pieces that you allow the natural patinas of time to grace the surface and make the piece more of its place. The brass pieces if polished are polished with Brasso - this can be reapplied at any choosen time to bring back the original finish, again here subject to taste the brass can be left to darken and age in its natural way. All metals will react to the atmospheric conditions - more moisture will bring about oxidation and potentially will require more re-application of finishes.

Sculptural and kinetic pieces - these pieces are delicate and should not need regular finishing or cleaning. Dust can be removed from metal parts using a natural cloth. For more delicate parts we recommend cleaning with a air blower. Please be in touch for any further advice on caring for the sculptural work.
